Novercaphobia is the fear of your step-mother. This is fairly uncommon because a lot of us do not have step-mothers to begin with. This fear is said to be closely related to other phobias such as Pentheraphobia which is the fear of your mother-in-law, Vitricophobia or the fear of your step-father.
People with this fear usually have fear of authority figures, especially parental figures, and this fear is aggravated by the fact that one’s mother is not a biological parent but is someone that just assumed the responsibility of taking care of him or her. This fear could have also been due to watching on TV horror-stories about having cruel step-mothers and is best seen in Cinderella, the story of a young girl who has left in the cinders by her wicked step-mother and evil step-sisters.
Symptoms include avoidance of the step-mother, as well as symptoms of anxiety may be seen in patients with this phobia including palpitations, nausea, vomiting, tremors.
Treatment usually includes behavioral and cognitive psychotherapy.
