The chin is a part of the normal anatomy of the face and is not given attention most of the time. But there are some people with an irrational fear of this part of the face and they are called Geniophobes, the word being derived from the Greek word genio meaning ‘chin’ or ‘jaw’. Chins come in different shapes. Some may small chins, big chins, square chins, or sometimes double chins. Some may have prominent chins and this can be considered by some as an aesthetic reason to be scared of chins.
Most people with this phobia have an obsessive personality and they feel obsessed with other people’s chins, especially those with imperfect chins. Some may fear chins because they might have fallen down in the past and injured their chins but this is very unlikely because the chin is one of the least injured parts of the face.
People with this fear can’t stop looking at other people’s chins and may even avoid interacting with people whose chins they consider as hideous or deformed. They may become introverts in extreme cases.
Treatment includes behavioral and cognitive therapy. Since all of us have chins, for those with extreme manifestations of phobia, medications may be needed to alleviate symptoms.
