Dishabiliophobia- Fear of undressing in front of someone

The fear of undressing in front of someone is known as Dishabiliophobia. This fear has many causes and can be a sign of poor self-esteem. For most of us, undressing in front of someone whether or not it preludes to a sexual encounter can be very intimidating and most of us have concerns with attractiveness or morality.

Females usually tend to have more of this phobia due to society’s harsh and unrealistic standards of female beauty such as those of models. Society’s expectations of what a woman should look like undressed vary from country to country, but it’s safe to say that Dishabiliophobia is still a global issue for most women.

This phobia can be noticed in changing rooms, locker rooms or even at a doctor’s office. It’s tough for those who are unhappy with their bodies to reveal themselves in public. Sometimes, being overweight can be a trigger for this phobia. Today, not only females suffer from this phobia but also young men who suffer from eating disorders. For some, undressing in front of others can be one of the reasons why eating disorders develop.

Symptoms of Dishabiliophobia will include the shunning of public changing rooms, and it may affect intimate relationships. People with this phobia will prefer to make love in a room where the lights are very low or off. Panic treatment and psychotherapy can help to resolve fears and promote better self-esteem.
