Didaskaleinophobia or Scolionophobia- Fear of going to school

Scolionophobia or Didaskaleinophobia occurs children who tend to get fearful of schools because it is difficult for them to leave their parents and security of their home. It is regarded as a specific phobia. A stressful event in school might have contributed to the child’s fear of school and includes having to do a lot of homework and other school activities that overwhelms the child, dealing with bullies in class, or having a terror teacher.

This fear may also be associated with fear of learning especially when the school imposes them to learn more than the child can handle resulting in a low or failing mark and getting scolded or ridiculed for it. Others may also feel abandoned when they are in school.

The most apparent sign of this phobia is when a child totally refuses to attend school. Your child might start making excuses such as being sick or exhausted when it’s time to go to school. Others may manifest with symptoms of anxiety such as trembling. Some may even have sleep disturbances and may have bad dreams about school. On the other hand, he/she may have temper tantrums when its time for school.

Treatment consists of educational support therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy & intensive psychotherapy and should involve the child, parents, teachers and even the school itself. Antidepressants may be used in some cases.
