Dermatosiophobia or Dermatophobia or Dermatopathophobia- Fear of skin disease

The skin is the largest organ of the human body and the fear of contracting skin diseases and other associated skin lesions is known as Dermatosiophobia, Dermatophobia or Dermatopathophobia.

Skin conditions can be non-fatal or fatal. Some skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can cause intense itching, redness and dryness and are just bothersome since they are very difficult to control and treat. Skin lesions such as those found in patients with HIV or AIDS are sometimes one of the trigger reasons why people fear skin lesions. HIV lesions (Kaposi’s Sarcoma) often occur on the face which are dangerous and are unpleasant to look at. Lesions such as these can cause great psychological impact especially when they appear in unwanted places that you can’t hide. Not only HIV manifests with skin lesions but also other STDs and if you are suspecting that you might have a rash or lesion that is caused by STD, the sooner you seek help, the better is the cure rate.

People who fear skin lesions and diseases may sometimes have the tendency to over cleanse their skin and frequent using of antibacterial lotions and spray can cause further irritation due to the removal of the skin’s natural oils and barrier and can even further worsen the condition.

If you’re not sure of your skin condition, don’t self-medicate and consult a dermatologist. Sometimes, your fear of skin lesions can cause sleepless night, dizziness, malaise and intense anxiety. Proper knowledge and education about these skin lesions can help you lessen your fear and protect yourself more effectively.
