Climacophobia is the fear of stairs, fear of climbing stairs and fear of falling down stairs.
Climacophobia may be caused by a wide variety of factors. An especially common cause is a previous negative experience. If you have fallen down a set of stairs, had difficulty completing a climb or had a panic attack while climbing, you may be more prone to developing this kind of phobia. The negative experience need not to happen to someone directly sometimes they just witnessed some accident on stairs or a loved is afraid of stairs, in some rare cases, others had develop this kind of fear after watching someone suffer an accident while climbing on a television or movie.
Symptoms that resemble to vertigo such as dizziness when looking down the stairs are usually manifested by the Climacophobic person.
Climacophobia responds well to Cognitive behavioral therapy because this form of treatment is helping the climacophobic person to stop their own negative thoughts about climbing and replaces them with more rational self talk. Other treatments options are medication and relaxation techniques which help in getting the fear in control.
