Chrometophobia or Chrematophobia- Fear of money

Nowadays money has become a necessity. We use money in our everyday life. Chrometophobia or Chrematophobia is an abnormal and persistent fear of money. Chrematophobia is derived from the Greek word “chrimata” which means money and “phobos” as fear.

Person who suffers from chrometophobia are completely helpless and debilitating for without money they can’t buy anything and it would be very difficult to take care of themselves. They usually live in the streets and are afraid of begging for money even if they are starving.

Chrometophobia is not only about physical handling of money but also about having money and its value.

Having this fear of money is more complicated than it seems. It can be related to the pressures of managing money. Those who have less money are also prone to having this kind of phobia, thinking about how little the money they have will make them feel anxious and will become their undesirable focus which will later affect their lives.

Panic attack such as dizziness, sweating, numbness and confusion are the common symptoms of a chrometophobic person.
Breaking free from the fear of money may need some hard work and education. Attending classes that will assist in managing practical budgets is a big help in gaining control over the fears. Cognitive therapy will ease panic attack for it retrains the brain to view fears of money differently.
