Autophobia may mean one of two things. First, it could mean that a person is scared of being alone or isolated. Second, if taken literally, it could mean an irrational fear of being oneself and is associated with self-hatred.
In life, we have to realize that at some point in our life, we will experience being alone. Solitude is something that most people want from time to time but those with Autophobia will always find ways to be with other people, may it be with people they know, or people they will meet in a bar or the mall. Being alone is also a very real fear for people who have poor self-esteem and are used to having other people do stuff for them. Most of these people are extroverts, that is they become more productive when they work with groups, and would prefer jobs that require interaction with other people.
Autophobics might have also experienced being left alone when they were children and experienced great fear at that point in time. Subsequently, being alone or being left alone causes them great anxiety. Others might have had a spouse or real close friend die and they felt extreme loneliness.
These people would make sure that they are always with someone and they are never alone. Treatment includes psychotherapy so as to teach these phobics that being alone is not a bad thing.
